3 Speakers with Strategies

Dr. Tania May, OSPI Asst Superintendent for Special Education

Dr. Tania May will share updates on the vision, co-construction, and goals of the Inclusionary Practices Technical Assistance Network (IPTN). The IPTN seeks to reduce exclusionary practices and segregated systems of disproportionality for all students in Washington state. This partnership network is leveraging an MTSS framework to improve student outcomes by resourcing effective guidance and tiered technical assistance.

Sally Carmen, Requested Trainer for Medical Professionals and School Personnel

Her focus as an Occupational Therapist is strength-based treatment with adults, children, teens and young adults affected by trauma and adverse experiences; this includes families with foster and adopted children. Sally will discuss the parameters of secondary stress/trauma, and how institutions and individuals can recognize and guard against overwhelm and compassion fatigue. We will learn how to acknowledge, validate and regulate our individual experience, to both model and support the students we strive to serve.

Dr. Alicia Roberts Frank, ESD 113 Addressing Dyslexia

She is a Regional Administrator for Special Programs/Dyslexia Specialist, and she is trained in Slingerland, a classroom adaptation of the Orton Gillingham approach for teaching students with dyslexia. Her topic will address Understanding Dyslexia to Understand Literacy for All. This session introduces educators to the neuroscience of dyslexia and literacy development and provides resources for continued learning.
